A person new in the field opting for the right career, don’t be confused with what society has to offer for you. People in general preferred choosing the conventional ‘stable’ careers over offbeat ones like swimming. By the time they get to know what goes around them, students are already getting into medical, law, engineering in India and other traditional career options that provided a ‘stable’ future.
If a father is an electrical engineer, it made sense to follow in his footsteps. Not that one’s parents ever forced one to take up engineering. They know about their varied interests but didn’t know how to help the children turn those into full-fledged careers. They do, however, know enough about engineering and could only guide one down that path.
Of course, when you’re at the cusp of making a career decision, opinions are handed out like sweets during Diwali. “You should be a journalist,” said some people. “Engineering is the way to go,” others would say. A student had so many interests, that most of them couldn’t even begin to decide which one to follow.
A lot of students like dancing as much as imitation, snuggling up in a corner and writing as much as participating in sports. Have you ever heard the expression “Jack of all trades, master of none”? That would sum up an enthusiastic 17-year-old student.
Once the results are out, engineering and medicine seemed like the two most popular choices. Given the interest in computers (as well), students veered towards engineering and began prepping for all the possible entrance exams right away.
Think they had a head-start? You’d be surprised to know that some of your batch mates had begun preparing for the entrance exams right from Class 8! It’s important to begin ‘pushing’ yourself to delve deeper into engineering-related subjects right from Class 7, and as you had a natural aptitude for those subjects, it seems like a great decision at the time.
Like every other aspiring engineer, students enrol for a JEE coaching class too. They spend two years after Class 10 dividing their time between studying for junior college and prepping for various entrance exams, just so they would increase their chances of getting into a decent college. Most of them already knew that IIT wasn’t their bag but what’s wrong with trying? Most of the student’s reason for getting into engineering is to get a stable job.
There are a lot of examinations for getting enrolled on engineering just like the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), but what has been on the list for the last few years has been Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), for getting into colleges like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) & almost every other engineering college. College life is as good as having a working life. A student is in class from 10 to 5:30 and the rest of our time is divided between completing assignments, participating in co-curricular activities and socializing. There is a college with campuses of close-knit students who had each other’s backs through good times and bad.
A student finds & develops connections with his/her batchmates & seniors do come in help on tough assignments, peer problems and just about everything else. Some of the colleges have some of the finest festivals that are fun to both organize and participate in.
Social and cocurricular life do feel thriving, but education is sadly not at par. Professors are very good at conversing in English, and the lectures are often delivered in a casual mix of Hindi and English. There is an absolute focus on developing soft skills, a pattern that prevails in engineering institutes across India even today. The results? A bunch of knowledgeable engineering graduates who don’t lack the soft skills to express their talents.
Students have no regrets about the years spent in engineering school. They are given the opportunity to learn, and they are able to pursue interests through co-curricular activities. As a result, students are graduated as self-sufficient, culturally and socially endowed individuals with a good understanding of construction engineering.
Interests, on the other hand, are never remained untouched. A part of them always wishes to learn more about marketing, media, business management, and advertising, which is included in the engineering programme.
While students have been better if they knew from the very start what to pursue, as most of them are totally unaware of the upcoming opportunities & that too in the field of engineering itself. Like every other engineering student doesn’t go for pursuing MBA as a master’s degree, in fact, wait & take your time to analyze what to pursue after your 4 incredible years at the engineering school.
